Understand the difference
A full truckload generally reserves trailer capacity for one shipment or shipper. Less-than-truckload service combines smaller shipments. LTL can involve consolidation and terminal transfers, while the specific routing and handling depend on the service quoted.
Consider more than weight
Long, bulky or non-stackable freight can consume a large amount of space even at a modest weight. Measure every handling unit. Pallet count alone does not establish how much usable trailer space the shipment requires.
Account for handling and packaging
If freight is fragile, unusually shaped or difficult to transfer, explain the handling restrictions before requesting a rate. LTL freight should be packaged for the handling involved. FTL does not remove the need for proper packaging, securement and loading instructions.
Compare the complete service
Compare the proposed transit, pickup arrangements, transfer points where known, appointments and extra charges. The lowest initial rate may describe a different level of service. Ask whether transit is estimated or specifically committed.
Send the load profile for review
There is no universal pallet threshold that makes FTL or LTL the right choice. Send dimensions, weight, commodity and timing, and ask for an option that fits the actual shipment.
