Understanding additional freight charges

Ask what the quoted rate includes and which charges depend on the actual shipment.

Separate linehaul from additional services

A transport quote may describe the basic movement and list fuel or additional services separately. Read the inclusions and exclusions. There is no single universal list or tariff that applies to every carrier and shipment.

Watch the time at pickup and delivery

Waiting, detention, layover or a missed appointment may lead to additional charges under the agreed terms. Confirm the included time, when the clock starts, and how extra time is documented. Keep dispatch informed if loading or unloading is delayed.

Identify access and handling needs

Tailgate service, limited-access delivery, inside delivery, driver assistance, extra stops or a return trip can change the cost. Tell the rate provider what the facilities can and cannot do. Do not assume the driver can unload the freight.

Clarify container-related costs

For container moves, clarify terminal storage, demurrage, detention, chassis time and empty-return arrangements as applicable. Different parties may bill different charges. Confirm the relevant dates and responsibilities rather than assuming the freight rate covers them.

Get changes recorded

If the scope changes, ask for the cost implication before approving the extra service where practical. Keep the quote, confirmation, appointment information and relevant records together. Actual charges follow the agreement for the shipment, not this general guide.
